We’re a very digitized culture these days. With more people than ever before engaging on more social media platforms than ever before, we’ve begun to cultivate many relationships, professional, friendly, and romantic, entirely on the Internet. It’s great at times. We’ve reached people in other countries and we can Tweet at our favorite celebrities. We can unite on Pinterest under the banner of our favorite cheesecake recipe, but what about the personal touch? What happened to heartfelt declarations of love and friendship, and face-to-face contact? It’s still there, but it’s different now. One man decided to ignore the conventions of digital behavior and lay himself bare for the girl he desired. It’s an unbridled display of human emotion, and we can learn from it this weekend. We applaud his ambition. Look at this brave young man:
The Internet responded almost immediately with backlash parody videos:
His posture has become lovingly known as #DrakeHands. In his own words, barista Brody Curtis was only being “cute and genuine.” And, while the Internet alit with negative comments, his gesture was not for nothing. Curtis successfully landed a date with the intended recipient, model Piper Kennedy.
This weekend reach out to someone! Don’t let social constructs get in the way. Be yourself, and you might have success as well. We can all learn from Brody Curtis. Now, get out into the world and be the real you!
What are you doing to profess your feelings this weekend?
