Remember playing Snake, or even Snake II, on your cell phone ten years ago? Pretty cutting-edge stuff, right? Now, think about your smart phone today. Progress stops for no one, and while we’ve made some pretty crazy leaps forward since ten years ago, imagine where we’ll be with technology ten years from now, or even longer. Mind. BLOWN. Robotic, intelligent ampjacket? Only time will tell. Based on predictions from tech experts today, we’ve put together this list of technology that sounds like something out of James Cameron’s head. These are things we can actually expect to see in the not-too-distant future.
Real Sci-Fi from the Near Future:
1) Computer Clothing
Computers will be smaller and, more importantly, integrated into everything. Articles of clothing will contain computers, so will walls, tables, chairs, bathrooms, and other things we haven’t even thought about yet. Birdhouses?
2) The Quantified Self
In the future, everything about you will be quantified by computers, i.e. what you like to eat, what you watch on TV, what you listen to; essentially, your self will be documented by the devices you use. All this data will feed into algorithms so that advertisers can target your specific wants. Whoa. Keep researching cheeseburgers.
3) 3D Printing
This is happening right now. We can prints guns and food already. If we could someday print water, we’d cover the most globally influential items, coming right out of your printer.
4) Digital Biology
We’re close to complete bioengineering. Imagine a world where we can program plants to grow into shapes that we want, because it’s on its way. We think it’d be a good idea to grow cubic tomatoes, so when you take a slice it fits perfectly on your sandwich! There’s probably some bigger-picture thinking to be had, but not bad, right?
5) It Was Inside You All Along
We already have chip technology for monitoring your vitals, but in the future, the chip will be inside you. You’ll never have to put on another wristband or pedometer, ever. The chip inside your body will tell you, at any moment, exactly what your vitals are. Consider the possibilities. You have a heart attack and your body calls the ambulance and has the vitals ready to go. Pretty neat.
These are only five topics in a much longer conversation. The future will be interesting, to say the very least. Science still has two years to develop the hoverboards from Back to the Future Part II on time, and wouldn’t you know it, we’re actually getting closer. Exciting things are on the horizon. We welcome them with open arms, arms that will probably contain computers one day.
